Trump Faces Backlash Over Remarks on Rob Reiner’s Death

Staff December 16, 2025

President Trump’s attribution of Rob Reiner’s death to “Trump derangement syndrome” sparked criticism from both Democrats and Republicans, including former senior adviser David Urban, who called the comments “indefensible” ahead of the 2024 midterms.

David Urban, who served as a senior adviser on President Trump’s 2016 campaign, called Trump’s remarks on the death of acclaimed actor-director Rob Reiner “indefensible” and suggested they could hurt the GOP in next year’s midterms. “First of all, my condolences go out to the Reiner family. It’s a terrible tragedy that they’ve suffered here, and the president’s tweets — his Truth Social post — is indefensible by anybody. I don’t know how anyone can defend it,” Urban said Monday on CNN’s “The Source.” “It’s saddening, because the president does lots of good things. His administration does lots of good things. But yet these kind of posts, these kind of actions by the president, detract from all of that,” he added. “I think the president forgot elections are about addition, one plus one plus one, and as we head into the midterms I’m wondering, you know, how many Republicans were added to the voter rolls today,” the former Trump aide continued. “I think none.” Urban joins a wave of Republicans pushing back on Trump for suggesting the director, a prolific Democratic donor and advocate for progressive causes, died because of his disdain for the president — what the president terms “Trump derangement syndrome.”

Former President Donald Trump has come under fire following his controversial comments regarding the death of acclaimed actor and director Rob Reiner. Trump attributed Reiner’s passing to what he called “Trump derangement syndrome,” a phrase he has used to describe intense opposition to him. The remarks have drawn widespread condemnation, including from conservative allies who deemed the comments inappropriate and potentially damaging to the Republican Party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Rob Reiner, known for his prolific work as a Hollywood director and actor, was also a well-known Democratic donor and advocate for progressive causes. His death was met with condolences from across the political spectrum, but Trump’s response quickly ignited controversy. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump suggested that Reiner’s animosity toward him was a contributing factor to the tragedy.

David Urban, a former senior adviser on Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, publicly criticized the former president’s remarks. Speaking on CNN’s "The Source," Urban expressed condolences to the Reiner family and described Trump’s comments as “indefensible.”

“First of all, my condolences go out to the Reiner family. It’s a terrible tragedy that they’ve suffered here, and the president’s tweets — his Truth Social post — is indefensible by anybody. I don’t know how anyone can defend it,” Urban said.

Urban, who remains involved in Republican politics, emphasized that such statements detract from the positive achievements of Trump’s administration. He suggested that comments like these could undermine GOP efforts to expand their voter base in the upcoming midterms.

“It’s saddening, because the president does lots of good things. His administration does lots of good things. But yet these kind of posts, these kind of actions by the president, detract from all of that,” Urban added.

Highlighting the political implications, Urban noted the importance of coalition-building ahead of elections. He remarked,

“I think the president forgot elections are about addition, one plus one plus one, and as we head into the midterms I’m wondering, you know, how many Republicans were added to the voter rolls today. I think none.”

Urban’s comments reflect a growing number of Republicans who have publicly distanced themselves from Trump’s remarks. While Trump has maintained a strong base of support within the party, the backlash underscores tensions between his approach to political discourse and broader GOP strategies aimed at appealing to a wider electorate.

Rob Reiner’s passing was met with widespread mourning, and many leaders emphasized the importance of respectful dialogue in the face of personal loss. The episode illustrates the continuing polarization in American politics, especially surrounding figures who remain influential both in entertainment and political advocacy.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, the Republican Party faces the challenge of balancing loyalty to Trump with efforts to present a unified and constructive platform to voters. Observers note that controversies like this may complicate outreach efforts, particularly among moderate and independent voters.

In summary, Trump’s comments on Rob Reiner’s death have sparked a rare moment of bipartisan criticism, with even some of his closest allies urging restraint and respect. The incident serves as a reminder of the high stakes and sensitivities in contemporary political communication.
