5-Year-Old Amada Mia Brown Died After Being Swept Out to Sea in Laguna Beach

On Tuesday night, a 5‑year‑old girl from San Bernardino was swept out to sea by a powerful wave at Laguna Beach, California. Amada Mia Brown was with her mother and brother when the surf pulled them into the ocean near Treasure Island Beach. Rescue teams saved the mother and brother, but Amada was carried out to sea and could not be recovered at that time.

The incident happened during a stretch of unusually large swells along the Southern California coast. Local lifeguards and the U.S. Coast Guard responded immediately. Two volunteers who helped with the rescue were later taken to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries. The Coast Guard, together with partner agencies, launched a search that lasted more than 30 hours and covered about 90 square miles.

Video footage released by local media shows the frantic search. High‑powered flashlights were used from the shore and cliffside as crews combed the beach and surrounding waters. The search was suspended on Wednesday evening after authorities concluded that further efforts were unlikely to succeed. However, on Thursday morning, an aerial search by the Laguna Beach Police Department located Amada’s body roughly 250 to 300 yards offshore—about a quarter‑mile north of the point where she was swept away.

A vigil was held following the discovery. Amada’s father, Aaron Brown, described his daughter as a “little princess” and a cheerful child who loved the water. He said she enjoyed movies such as “Moana” and “Frozen.” Brown paid tribute to his daughter during the vigil and expressed gratitude for the rescue teams.

In the days after the incident, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support the family. By Friday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised more than $12,000. The campaign was shared by the family and local community members.

The same powerful storm that swept Amada away also claimed another victim in Santa Cruz County. On Wednesday, a person was confirmed dead and another was in critical condition after being swept into the ocean at Bonny Doon Beach. A Santa Cruz County Sheriff spokesperson confirmed the incident.

Amada was scheduled to begin kindergarten in the San Bernardino City Unified School District in August. School officials noted that she was also set to attend a new student orientation the following month. Her death has prompted a broader discussion about beach safety and the risks posed by large swells.

The U.S. Coast Guard has issued warnings about the potential for dangerous surf conditions along the California coast. Local authorities have urged beachgoers to heed posted warnings and to avoid entering the water during periods of high surf.

The incident underscores the importance of beach safety measures and the need for continued public awareness about the hazards of powerful waves. The community has rallied around the Brown family, offering support and condolences.

This event is part of a series of incidents that have highlighted the dangers of the Pacific Ocean during the current storm season. Authorities continue to monitor conditions and advise caution for anyone visiting the coast.

Residents and visitors are reminded to stay alert to changing surf conditions and to follow official beach safety advisories. The tragedy has prompted local officials to review beach safety protocols and to enhance lifeguard training during high‑swell periods.
